ORACLE is a brand new innovative audio visual installation from MindBuffer. The work seeks to represent the manifestation of an Oracle, a precognitive non-biological sentient computer program. ORACLE is composed of a long tunnel where audiences are engulfed in a tightly synced choreographed interplay between the sonic sound track and 128 moving head lights. Audiences have the opportunity to be both sonically and visually engulfed in a highly immersive experience as they explore the different vantage points throughout the space. Breaking conventions, MindBuffer have created the work using their own custom built software. This has enabled the artists to compose tightly integrated correlations between the sonic and visual aesthetics. As a result, a visceral response to the synchronisation of sensory events occurring at the granular level is assured.
In the Wachowski’s renown work The Matrix, the Oracle is an artificial intelligence that defies all conventions in her choice to help humanity. In contrast with an age of cold, efficient and heartless tech, the Oracle is a demonstration of the euphoric potential in the symbiosis of machines and humans. ORACLE is a work inspired by this intent for a beautiful symbiosis between humans and the machines that surround us. As such, audience members are invited to not only watch from the side lines but to immerse themselves within the womb of the ORACLE. The content produced is inclusive and accessible for all demographics attending the festival. We have strived to create a highly engaging work utilising the most cutting edge tools that we have up our sleeves.

ORACLE | MindBuffer
Lattice is a 5x channel audiovisual laser installation driven by custom generative music software that creates uniquely unfolding patterns. The lasers project these patterns through ten layers of transparent gauze suspended above the audience. This creates the illusion of floating holographic visuals combining into lattice like structures unique to the viewers location in space.
The installation was run using custom software MindBuffer labs including a hand-rolled networked laser protocol, ngon path-tracing and generative music system. Ready to start working on V2.0. Get in touch with us if your interested in more details. Turn the sound on ;)
The work was on display at Scienceworks in Melbourne, Vicotoria from July 2017 until April 2018.
Lattice Initial Preview
IBM Outthink Melanoma
We programmed realtime interactive software as part of the Melanoma Analysis Interactive Smart Mirrors for IBM and their Outthink Melanoma campaign.
The installation utilised 2 Canon camera feeds and 2 Ultraviolet cameras to detect the amount of sunscreen coverage of participants. We then tracked facial features and used realtime graphics shaders to overlay information about their level of sun protection using custom smart mirrors.
We performed our custom laser software for the DJ Hell gig at St Pauls Catherdral as part of Melbourne Music Week in 2017. The installation featured 2x 3.5 watt KVANT lasers and 60 laser diodes configured in the shape of a triangle.
Audiovisual artists MindBuffer (who illuminated Storey Hall in 2016) teamed up with world-renowned digital artist Andy Thomas to flood the building’s façade with Ectoplasm – a mind bending audio reactive display. Ectoplasm features the visceral aesthetic of MindBuffer alongside Thomas’ synthetic infusion of organic systems. Ectoplasm is a supernatural viscous substance exuding from the clear outer layer of the cytoplasm in amoeboid cells leading to the manifestation of spirits.
Ectoplasm was featured at White Night Melbourne festival in 2017, running for 12 hours from 7pm - 7am.

MindBuffer was invited by the RMIT University Gallery to create a custom projection mapping work for White Night Melbourne 2016. We developed custom projection mapping software in openFrameworks that allowed us to play live generative visuals throughout the night from 7pm to 7am the next day.
The projectors were a stack of 2x Barco HDX-W20 FLEX allowing us to throw 40,000 lumens of light onto the facade of Storey Hall. Needless to say it was a lot of fun!
Limit Theory is a procedural space game developed by the ridiculously talented Josh Parnell. An RPG, RTS, and sandbox space exploration game all-in-one. Explore, trade, build, and fight in a beautiful, procedural universe.
We were contacted by Josh at the completion of his successful Kickstarter campaign to spend 2 years developing over 4000 custom sounds for the game ranging from weapon fire, space ambience to capital ship and planet explosion sounds.
Limit theory is due for public release on the Steam platform in late 2017.

Kortex is a realtime unified audiovisual composition and performance tool developed using openFrameworks. At the heart of Kortex is an audiovisual granular synthesis engine that evolved in part through my PhD research into the subject. Kortex also features a FM synthesis engine, DSP and post processing effects engine and a realtime GLSL shader engine. Recently Kortex has been upgraded to facilitate realtime control over any DMX / Artnet compatible lights and laser projectors.
I developed Kortex for sole purpose of using it for MindBuffer performances and interactive installations. The software can be interfaced with using MIDI, OSC, UI or via a Timeline. Although I have been working on Kortex for the past 6 + years there is still quite a lot I would like to develop still. Once i consider that the core is stable enough I plan on realising the code as open source for others to contribute to. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

A jenerative music framework designed for creating rich, unique and never-ending soundtracks. She is the result of years of care, attention and passionate work - with many, many more years to come. Jen can compose thousands of songs in the time it takes me to write one note. Her code base is written entirely in Rust, a language renown for its performance and memory safety. In RAM, she's the size of a single song.
* Compose whole songs in an instant. * Interpret and react to input in real-time. * Generate rich DSP graphs (tracks, effects, bussing, side-chaining). * Use native synthesis and sampling for high quality instrumentation. * Generate envelopes for automating instrument and effects parameters. * Do all of the above in a few milliseconds, never using more than ~15mb RAM. * Run on all major platforms: OSX, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android.

MindBuffer headlined Decode for Melbourne Knowledge Week in 2017. We debuted Jen and our custom laser software to perform a 100% generative audiovisual laser set.
We got asked to play at the Melbourne Media Lab’s Code event in 2013. Had a blast, see the video link below for a snapshot of the set. I think the video accurately depicts the kind of aesthetics we were going for with the setup back then.

In 2013, Mindbuffer was planning on doing a tour or the US but had to postpone due to PhD commitments :( Leading up, we decided to test Kortex's abilities at the time to create a AVGS triple screen remix synced to one of our tracks. We chose to remix Hanna as it's one of our favourite films from that time. The whole video is rendered in realtime, no post production, everything synchronised from the inbuilt timeline in Kortex.
